Your website is built for people to read, but people are not the only ones reading it. When you use a major search engine, the results you get back are possible because that search engine has looked at every website available, read the content, and knows what every website is about. This is not accomplished with humans, it is accomplished with automated processes, or "bots". Bots visit your site in order to determine the content of your site, or in other words, to index it.

Your website needs to be coded with this indexing in mind. By clearly marking which information should be indexed first, second, etc., you are increasing your chances of your site being correctly indexed, and ultimately found.

Keywords

How will people search for your site? The answer to this question is also the answer to your keywords. For instance, if you are a plumber in Hackensack, NJ, then your keywords are going to be something like "plumber, Hackensack, NJ, New Jersey, water pipes, busted water pipes, toilet repair"... just to get started. So your introductory welcome message will be something like:

"Welcome to ABC Plumbing! We are located in Hackensack, NJ and we specialize in busted water pipes and toilet repair."

Analytics

The addition of a web analytic program reports user traffic: how many visitors, how long they stayed on your site, what site they just came from, and what keywords they searched to arrive at your site. By analyzing statistical data you can understand how visitors are using your site and what it took to get them there.
