The biggest contributing factor to the success of your website is having something to say. What information do you have that people want? What information do you have that other people could benefit from?

Why do you want to have a website? If it is for your business, then you have a lot to say. Establishing an Internet presence for your company will start with your contact information. It will also include what your specialty is. What services does your business offer? What do you do better than anyone else? Why should people call you?

Your website should clearly show who you are, what you do, and how to contact you. It should highlight what you are best at. It should also tell users what to do, for example where to click to "Buy Now".

If your business is not as unique as the example below, you can still offer unique content. The simple act of sitting down and writing about the services you offer is considered unique content. If it is your own words and not copied from somebody else's website, then that is considered unique content.

Providing Content

If you do not know what to say, then you need help with something called "content generation. This starts with being able to put your unique business proposition into words, then identifying and highlighting the services you provide.

Information Architecture (IA)

It is important to know which information you want the user to look at first, second, third, etc. By mapping out an outline of your website you can know what information to highlight, or "call out". IA is important during the design process so that the designer can give the proper weight, color, and graphical treatments to the areas of information that are most important to the user.

Example of Successful Website Content

Jamtrak.net is example of successful website content

Jamtrak.net provides the unique service of booking organized Amtrak trips featuring live music with talented musicians. This website content is successful because it:

  • Lists the trip dates
  • Provides a "Buy Now" button
  • Highlights the musicians featured
  • Plays video testimonials in "What People Say"
  • Provides a mission statement linked to being "green"
  • Provides contact information

No one else provides the same information as Jamtrak, so this is an example of providing unique content that can not be found elsewhere. If your business is not as unique as Jamtrak, look at the services you provide and highlight a personal touch that only you can offer.
